A small lodge that is not a resort
Legend Lodge is a small fly-in fishing lodge on Lake Iliamna on the Alaska Peninsula, owner-operated by Jack and his crew for more than twenty-five seasons. It is not a resort. Guests fly in from Iliamna, stay in a lodge with running water, electricity and internet, eat breakfast, lunch and dinner cooked on site, and spend five days on rivers the lodge calls home: the Copper, which the lodge ranks among North America's top 100 trout fly fishing rivers, and the Gibraltar. The guides are Coast Guard certified and fish these waters every day of the season. Groups are capped at six, so beginners get taught and experienced anglers get left alone to fish. The promise is simple: Alaska as it actually is, with people who know it.
Rooted on Lake Iliamna, run from northern Minnesota
Lake Iliamna is the largest lake in Alaska and one of the least visited, a flight southwest of Anchorage with no road in. The villages around it are small, and the lodge operates in that world: float plane schedules, cargo runs, and neighbors who have fished the Copper River for generations. Jack has run Legend Lodge from that base for a quarter century, and in the off-season the business is managed from Bemidji, Minnesota, which is why the phone number starts with 218 and why so many of the lodge's guests come from the Upper Midwest. That Minnesota-to-Alaska link is part of the character. Guests who learned to cast on a Minnesota lake end up landing lake-run rainbows on the Copper, and many come back year after year, adding their photos to the wall of previous expeditions.

Questions guests ask before they book
How do I get to Legend Lodge? Fly from Anchorage to Iliamna, about 250 miles. The lodge package includes the float plane flight from Iliamna to the lodge and back, and the staff coordinates cargo and plane schedules with you.
Do I need fly fishing experience? No. Trips suit beginners and experienced anglers. Guests who had never held a fly rod have been catching fish by the end of the first day.
What is included in the price? The main package includes five nights lodging, five days of fully guided fishing, the Iliamna flights, and all meals. Optional fly-outs and duck hunting are priced separately or included depending on dates. The Nushagak camp does not include air travel and requires a 50% deposit.
Can I keep my catch? Yes. Guests can bring home their full personal limit of salmon.
When is the season? Summer guiding runs from 6am to 6pm Alaska time. The Copper River special runs August 15 to September 10, and duck hunting opens after September 1.

The Copper River: the reason the lodge is where it is
The Copper River runs into Lake Iliamna near the lodge, and each August thousands of sockeye push up it, turning the river red and pulling the lake's big rainbows in behind them. Those chrome, lake-run Iliamna rainbows are the fish serious fly anglers travel for, and Legend Lodge has fished for them for more than twenty-five years. The Copper River special puts three or four guests on the river from mid-August to early September with private rooms and all meals, at a lower price than the full package. The Gibraltar River is the second home water and a fly-out option, and the Nushagak camp covers the king and silver run for anglers who want salmon numbers. Together they cover most of what Alaska fly fishing offers, from one lodge.

Because the lodge takes six guests at a time, dates are limited and popular weeks sell out; the Nushagak camp has limited availability with special dates by request. Jack and the staff work through the itinerary with each group: arrival in Anchorage, the flight to Iliamna, the float plane to the lodge, what to pack, and any add-ons such as fly-outs or a Cast and Blast. A deposit holds the dates. Guests receive gear guidance before departure, and the lodge coordinates cargo so rods and waders arrive with them.

Alaska has hundreds of fishing lodges, and most guests never learn who runs them. A lodge like Legend Lodge on Lake Iliamna is different: the owner who answers the phone in Bemidji in February is the person guiding you on the Copper River in August. Small group size means guides are not spread thin, the boat leaves when the fish are moving rather than on a resort timetable, and the meals come from the lodge kitchen instead of a catering truck.
